A Historic Supreme Court Appointment

Today we celebrate a historic vote.

President Biden didn't just keep his commitment to appoint the first Black female justice to the United State Supreme Court — the appointment of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is also one of the most impressive nominations in history. She has more than earned the right to serve in our nation's highest court.

While some Senate Republicans chose extreme and obnoxious lines of attack to undermine her credibility in the recent hearings, Judge Jackson's grounded responses revealed her strong character, intellect, and steely grace under pressure.

There is no question that she is highly qualified to fulfill the duties of a Supreme Court Justice.

Judge Jackson's confirmation comes at a critical time for our country. In the months and years to come, the Supreme Court will take up bedrock issues related to Roe v. Wade, the January 6 insurrection, the EPA's Clean Power Plan, and Affirmative Action. These cases and their decisions, whether in majority or in dissent, will have critical implications for our future.

Today, however, we celebrate Judge Jackson's landmark appointment as a victory. Her appointment marks a positive step forward for civil rights, women, and the notion of equal justice under the law. Congratulations to Judge Jackson, her family, and her legions of supporters.
