An update on tax fairness

Most of us can agree on what we want for our communities. We want quality health care, affordable housing, good-paying jobs, great schools, and clean air and water.

We need to use all of the tools in our toolbox to build that kind of future. That's why I'm working on the Ways and Means Committee in Congress to make sure that we're reforming our tax code to ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share, so working families can get the support they need to weather this pandemic.

Enacting tax policy solutions has never been more important in our fight to level the playing field and translate our grassroots movement into bold, transformative change. For years, Republicans have scammed the American people, claiming we cannot afford basic human rights like better health care, all while aiding and abetting the ultra-wealthy and biggest corporations in their efforts to pay as little in taxes as possible — if they even pay at all. That's just wrong.

I believe it's only reasonable that our tax system actively seeks to reduce wealth inequity and create opportunity for all Americans without mortgaging our children's future. We know it's possible, even if Republicans have spent a generation tricking Americans into thinking it isn't. That's why I'm leading the fight to ensure we support our progressive policy outcomes through sustainable, commonsense efforts:

  • Tax fairness for every American making less than $400,000 a year.
  • Giving the IRS tools to ensure that the wealthiest Americans pay what they owe.
  • Closing international loopholes to ensure large corporations are paying their fair share.

We have a historic chance to tackle wealth inequity while investing in the basic needs of Oregonians and providing critical services. And while we're at it, we can create numerous infrastructure and clean energy projects that will address the climate crisis and create good-paying jobs. Our movement's tireless organizing to create our Democratic majorities tells us this is possible, and we've come too far to give up.

I'm going to keep bringing you updates from the front lines of this fight in Congress, with every victory and bump in the road. Because I wholeheartedly believe that we can create a future for our communities where every family has a shot.

Stay tuned, and, as always, courage.

Earl
